I’ve been a regular writer for Australia’s foremost critical experimental arts magazine, RealTime, since 2008. My reviews, interviews, feature articles and critical writings on visual, performing and hybrid arts have also been commissioned by Art Monthly Australia, the Melbourne and Adelaide Festivals and The Barbican (UK), among others. I was an observer/writer for the 2014 Asian Producers Platform Camp in Seoul, Korea; and have produced narrative documentation for projects including Contact Inc.’s The Best. I have written catalogue essays for visual arts exhibitions, house program essays for theatre and music productions, and artist statements for dance and theatre artists. In 2013 I was a Blogger in Residence for the 19th International Symposium on Electronic Art (ISEA) in Sydney, contributing daily reports over two weeks.
During the past 20 years I’ve been a visual artist, photographer, musician, creative writer, collaborator, journalist, producer, arts marketer and copywriter – and not least, a committed arts supporter and audience member. My journalism is underpinned by deep understanding, experience and love of the artistic process, of creation and presentation, and of the Australian arts landscape; and is fuelled by a commitment to producing accurate, intelligent and thoughtful commentary that does justice to both artists and readers.
I’ve written high-quality brochure, website and general arts marketing copy for numerous organisations over the past two decades – recent clients include Melbourne’s Arts House, Dance Massive and the Festival of Live Art. All arts writing demands close attention to both the aims of the artist and the needs of the reader – copywriting must also meet the needs of the presenter. It’s a fine balance – getting bums on seats, formulating the right ‘voice’ for the presenter, inspiring audiences, and staying true to the artist’s vision – but with experience, and by listening to all stakeholders, it’s absolutely achievable.
I can take on arts season program guides as a combined job: writing show copy, writing and/or editing all other brochure information, and proofreading both manuscript and layouts. Having also managed the development of many publications from commissioning stage to print and delivery, I have strong experience and understanding of production processes and protocols, and can assist with any or all production management tasks as required.
